E-Book Formatting/Calls for Submission

Thought for the Week: Expectation is one of the greatest sources of suffering.” ~Buddhist statement

E-Book Formatting

Thinking of writing an e-book? Formatting can vary depending on where you choose to publish, but these links to articles (courtesy of BookBaby) give you an idea of what you’ll be dealing with. Save yourself some time later by following some of the advice while you write your book.

Deadline: September 30, 2012.  Planned publication April 2013

If you are the parent of a child with autism or Asperger's, Chicken Soup invites you to share your story about raising your child - the ups and downs, the effect on your family, your child's special attributes and talents, and the lighter moments too. You may use a "pen name" on your story. These stories will provide advice, comfort and insight to other parents in the same situation.
Pays $200 on publication plus ten copies of the book in which your work appears.

Deadline: October 1, 2012 (received)
No entry fee

Each year a distinguished poet is invited to select the winner of The Consequence Prize in Poetry. The award for best poem includes a cash prize of $200. The winning poet and three finalists will have their work published in the Spring 2013 issue of CONSEQUENCE Magazine. Consequence is a literary magazine that focuses "on the culture of war and social injustice."

Funds for Writers/Hockey Anthology Submission Call

Happy New Year! Writer’s Thought for 2012: Four steps to achievement: Plan purposefully. Prepare prayerfully. Proceed positively. Pursue persistently.  ~ William Arthur Ward

Funds for Writers creator, Hope Clark, is offering her paid subscription newsletter, Total Funds forWriters (TFFW), for only $9 until January 5. I’ve been a subscriber for years and have given a subscription as a gift. It is the only “for pay” newsletter I get.

TFFW arrives bi-weekly by e-mail and has succinct info on contests, grants, markets, and publishers. It also includes an editorial from Hope that may be about what’s new in publishing, marketing your work and /or yourself, staying motivated, or whatever topic grabbed her attention that week.

Are you a hockey mom or dad? A hockey fan? Chicken Soup for the Soul is looking for true stories, 1200 words or less, for their planned anthology, Hooked on Hockey. They pay $200 plus ten copies of the book for each story accepted. You retain the copyright to your work. Submission deadline is January 30, 2012.

In the Soup!

My "Dog Day Surprise" true story of what happens when two dogs visit Santa is in Chicken Soup for the Soul: The Gift of Christmas. This is my first time "in the Soup." I received my copies from Simon & Schuster last week. They have a cheery old-time Christmasy cover and a ribbon bookmark. The book should be available soon exclusively through Wal-Mart.

If you're not a Wal-Mart fan, wait a little longer and look for Chicken Soup for the Soul: Tales of Christmas which will be sold exclusively through Barnes & Noble. My story is in there, too. The two books have many stories in common.

According to the publisher, all stories are "Santa friendly."
